The medical name for bad breath is halitosis. One can get bad breath as a result of bad dental health. Yet, bad breath can also be a sign that you might have a health problem.
For a child, having bad breath can lead to feeling stressed and self-conscious due to teasing and this can cause a variety of other health issues.
You can make your bad breath stink even worse with different types of foods you consume. Unhealthy lifestyle habits can also make your case of bad breath, worse.
How does what you eat affect your breath?
Every single piece of food that you eat starts to deteriorate in your mouth as you chew. Strong odor foods like onions and garlic can leave your breath smelling bad, and a lot of times flossing, brushing, and even mouthwash won’t cover the odor.
Until the food that you have eaten has passed through your body, the odor will not go away. Strong odor foods can leave your breath smelling for hours or even days.
Why do poor habits cause bad breath?
If you do not floss and brush your teeth on a regular basis, the chances of finding food particles inside your mouth are 100%. When there are pieces of food that remain in your mouth after eating it leaves a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria can grow between your teeth, around your gums, and on your tongue. A mouth that has been infected with bacteria can cause bad breath.
Antibacterial mouth rinses are known to help with this problem as it helps to reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth. Food particles, odor-causing bacteria, and dentures that are not properly cleaned can cause you to have bad breath.
Chewing tobacco-based products or smoking can lead to bad breath, it can also irritate your gums while reducing your ability to taste foods, and staining your teeth.
What can we do to stop bad breath?
You can prevent or reduce bad breath by utilizing the following things.
• Looking after your oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use fluoride toothpaste to remove any plaque and food debris. Brush the outer and inner sides of your teeth, use up and down movement, as well as brushing in circles. You can also try brushing or rinsing with mouthwash after every meal. Remember to brush your tongue as well and floss once a day.
• Make appointments to see your dentist on a regular basis not only for check-ups but also for cleaning. Your dentist can clean your teeth professionally and he/she can conduct an oral examination. Your dentist will find any periodontal disease and will advise you on how you can treat it and what to use.
• You should consider not chewing any tobacco-based products and stop smoking. Your dentist will be more than happy to help you kick the habit.
• Ensure you consume plenty of water. Drinking lots of water will ensure that your mouth stays moist. Additionally, you can also eat a sugarless gum or candy, it will encourage your mouth to produce saliva which assists in washing away any bacteria and food particles.
• Make a log of all the different foods that you eat during the day. If you think that something you are eating is causing your bad breath, take your log book to your dentist so he/she can have a look.
Bad breath and health problems associated with it
You have a good chance of having gum disease if you have a bad taste in your mouth or persistent bad breath. Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease. You can get gum disease due to a build-up of plaque on your teeth.
Bacteria inside your mouth can cause toxins to form and it is these toxins that irritate your gums. If you do not treat gum disease you can actually damage your jawbone and gums.
Other things that can give you bad breath include dental caries (cavities), yeast infection inside your mouth, and dental appliances that fit poorly.
